Sarapan memberikan energi dan zat gizi yang diperlukan anak agar lebih fokus dan berkonsentrasi dalam beraktivitas di sekolah.

"Membiasakan sarapan bergizi dan tepat waktu, penting dilakukan terutama untuk anak usia sekolah dalam rangka meningkatkan kesehatan dan kecerdasan serta kedisiplinan anak," ucap Ketua Umum PDGMI, Dr. Rachmi Untoro, MPH pada acara Deklarasi Pekan Sarapan Nasional & Simposium Nasional Sarapan Sehat, Selasa (08/01/13).

Penelitian yang dilakukan Cueto S dan Chinen M tahun 2008 menyimpulkan bahwa anak sekolah yang sarapan meraih skor tes memori, tes penyelesaian masalah dan prestasi belajar yang lebih baik dibanding anak yang tidak sarapan.

Sarapan dapat mengatur fungsi otak dengan tiga mekanisme biologis, yaitu memberikan energi (glukosa) dan zat gizi pada sistem saraf pusat, memberikan zat gizi penting bagi tubuh, serta mengatur efisiensi kemampuan berpikir.

Sarapan terbukti bermanfaat bagi peningkatan mutu belajar anak, tetapi kenyataannya baru sekitar 50 persen anak sekolah di perkotaan yang biasa melakukan sarapan.

Selain itu penelitian menunjukkan adanya keterkaitan antara tidak rutin melakukan sarapan dengan kegemukan. Penelitian yang dilakukan Haug E pada pada tahun 2009 terhadap 200.000 anak sekolah yang kelebihan berat usia 11 hingga 15 tahun dari beberapa negara di Eropa menunjukkan bahwa melewatkan sarapan merupakan faktor resiko utama terjadinya kelebihan berat badan.
