After Deadly Storm, the U.S. Ready to Help Philippines

Washington DC: United States Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton offered condolences to the Philippines after more than 600 people feared dead in storms. Clinton said the United States stood "ready" for help. Similarly, as reported by AFP on Saturday (17/12).

Aid workers say that 440 people were killed and nearly 200 people missing after a tropical storm Washi wreaked havoc in the southern Philippines. As well, causing massive flooding across the country and destroyed the entire settlement.

"On behalf of President [Barack] Obama and the people of the United States, I want to send my deepest condolences for the devastation and loss of life caused by floods caused by tropical storm Washi," Clinton said. "The U.S. government is ready to assist Philippine authorities as they respond to this tragedy."

"Our thoughts and prayers together for all people affected by disaster," added the top U.S. diplomat.

About 20 thousand soldiers have been deployed in the rescue operation and massive aid along the northern coast of the storm-ravaged island of Mindanao, where the main port of Cagayan de Oro and Iligan suffered the worst blow.

President Benigno Aquino expressed concern over this vast tragedy. He also ordered government agencies to map out the areas most vulnerable to future floods.
